The Brightest Star in the Night Sky

A poem about longing, distance, and the pursuit of truth.

The brightest star in the midnight sky—
so radiant, I dare not look, nor venture near,
though still I try.

I rejoice in all the light
you scatter on the earth below,
yet secretly I long to know
the hidden source from which you glow.

But you are, after all, a star.
I cannot cradle what you are,
nor cross the silence of that space
to reach your distant place.

Gleaming as stars do,
when might your light be mine to hold?
Sorrow rises from within,
unbroken and unending.

What is it I am reaching for—
your radiance,
or the truth that flickers through?

Perhaps the truth I thought I glimpsed
was never fully yours to give,
but only meaning shaped within
the searching mind through which I live.

O star, my distant star,
forever in sight,
forever afar.
